Ian McKellen gives a rip-roaring performance as manipulative newspaper critic Jimmy Erskine, used to his own way in 1930s Fleet Street. But when new proprietor David Brooke, played by Mark Strong, steps into the chair, Erskine's comfy lfestyle comes under threat.

But he is prepared to use every trick in the book - and especially budding actress Nina Land (Gemma Arterton) - to keep his position, whatever the cost.
